I can see the Shillingstone quarry from my kitchen window and often painted the view. I had never explored the area up close until I began this project about ‘place’.

I was passing the road by the quarry when a gate opened and I was kindly invited in to view the old lime kilns first hand. I hadn’t known they existed; I was fascinated and it led me to research further the workings of these kilns, which were closed in 1920.

I had just been introduced to oil and cold wax painting and found the process ideal. This

enabled me to add limestone powder and charcoal, which gave me the feeling of being in this place.
