I can see the ShillingÂstone quarÂry from my kitchen winÂdow and often paintÂed the view. I had nevÂer explored the area up close until I began this project about ‘place’.
I was passÂing the road by the quarÂry when a gate opened and I was kindÂly invitÂed in to view the old lime kilns first hand. I hadÂn’t known they existÂed; I was fasÂciÂnatÂed and it led me to research furÂther the workÂings of these kilns, which were closed in 1920.

I had just been introÂduced to oil and cold wax paintÂing and found the process ideÂal. This
enabled me to add limeÂstone powÂder and charÂcoal, which gave me the feelÂing of being in this place.
